What are Backlinks?
Backlinks are connections that link one website or webpage with
another. As mentioned in the previous chapter, search engines employ
spider programs to hop from one page to another. They do this by
crawling along links from one site to another. Backlinks, therefore, are a
crucial way for you to link your website to the internet and to attract
spiders.
Of course, it is no longer as easy as filling your site with backlinks and
sitting back as the web searches pour in. Modern search engines are
cleverer than that and you will need to implement a varied approach as
outlined in section three. This section will outline the different types of
backlinks and their value.
The best backlinks are those that come naturally as a result of great
content. Your website must contain high quality, useful, timely content
that people will actually want to link to. This occurs when a user links to
your page on their blog, on their social network or on a social
bookmarking site. Such links are considered passive and you cannot
control how people react to your content, but you can tailor it to meet
demands and to raise interest.
These, however, are not the only links you should consider. There are many
possible ways to generate links.
Your primary objective should be to diversify and increase your qualified
traffic sources. Diversity is the name of the game with modern linking
strategies. The simple ways to build backlinks are outlined in Section 3
of this book. In short, they include web directories, advertising, blog and
forum comments, content websites and social networks.
Before you consider those different types of offsite backlinks, it is worth
considering what links are good and what are not. The subsequent
sections will cover some of these issues.
Do-follow vs. no-follow backlinks
There are two more ways of defining a backlink; these are “Do-follow”
links and “No-follow” links.
A “Do-follow” Link is a hyperlink that is in a position to tell search
engines to pass along its page rank authority to an outbound link.
A “No-follow” Link is exactly the opposite. This is a hyperlink that
removes the ability to pass on its page rank status to other sites.
How do “Do-follow” and “No-follow” Links Work?
In order to read a webpage and search for content, a Google Spider will
visit and read through websites. While doing so, it will regard links with a
“do-follow” feature and exclude any links with a “no-follow” attribute.
Therefore, your PR will get better with Bing or Yahoo if the spider likes
what they see on a “do-follow” site.
Where to Place No-follow or Do-follow Backlinks:
Sites, which are updated frequently, and those that have high traffic is
where you should aim at posting. This will obtain you better search
engines status as well as a higher Page Rank. However, one key point
to remember is that your web content should match the content of the
site that you intent to post in since search engines will be on the lookout
for related backlinks.
In conclusion, when adding either no-follow or do-follow backlinks your
objective should be to have as many quality and related backlinks to
your sites as possible to help improve your search engine rankings and
your authority status on Google!
Reasons for using No-Follow Links
No-follow links are useful if you want to link out to a site with
questionable content, adult content or employs questionable linking
tactics. You can also use no-follow links to stop spiders getting to sites
that you feel have enough links of their own like Hacker Safe or sites you
have to pay to get their badge on your site. Such sites do not need your
link.
Also, use these links if you are creating a page that does not need a
webpage ranking. This can be an internal page, a small function page or
a page that is only needed by people who already know where it is.
High PR backlinks vs. Low PR backlinks
The ranking of a backlink to your site depends on the site’s PR (Page
Rank) value. If a site with a PR value of five or above links to your site,
then you are doing well.
Keeping this in mind, it is definite that you would want to have a high PR
Backlink to your site from a premium site. The effectiveness of this
Backlink definitely depends on the PR the site carries.
You cannot get a strong link unless you know what establishes a strong
Backlink. A strong Backlink is obtainable from PR 6 or 7 or more.
Thence, if only your site has a link from a site, that has a PR 6 or 7, then
consider yourself having a strong Backlink.
How to find high PR pages to get a strong Backlink?
There are various sites that have a PR of over 6. In order to find out the
PR of a particular site, SEO tool come handy. They are easy to access
and provide guaranteed results. For instance, if you want to search a
particular keyword or perhaps key-phrases then do so on a search
engine and you will find out which pages are ranking high at the
moment. Furthermore, you can compare the results from different search
engines.
When you look for sites to get backlinks from or if you want to find out
which sites are backlinking to you, then you can search for PR ranking
sites that will let you know how various sites are performing.
It is certainly possible to submit your site to sites like myspace.com,
metacafe.com, propeller.com and others, but groundwork has to be
done before you top their lists or perhaps appear in their first pages.
The groundwork that is referred above is the fact that you must ensure
that your website is done correctly. Your tags should be organized and
appropriately chosen in order to het the Backlink for these high PR sites.
The advantage of having a strong Backlink from a high PR site is that it
will increase your PR in the search engines. Hence, to conclude, if you
wish to rank high on search engines, your best bet is to:
1. Create your website correctly
2. Organize and appropriately choose your tags
3. Get links for a high PR site!
Will Low PR Backlinks hurt your online presence?
The answer is probably not. Low PR Backlinks will certainly not hurt your
online presence but it will not do you any good either. You may have
several low PR Backlinks yet it will not raise your PR as fast as a high
PR Backlink would do.
However, you must keep in mind that having too many high PR
Backlinks can make search engines suspicious. Make sure you are not
being linked to by spam websites. Your best bet is to keep your site as
natural looking as possible, hence have a mix of both high and low PR
Backlinks to avoid being considered spam.
Directory Submissions
Website directories are listing sites for webpages. Some sites act as
virtual libraries for websites, while others have tapped into the demand
for social media and interactivity and have created recommendation
sites (called Social Bookmarking sites, see section 3.7), whereby a
user’s interests and web searches inform the web directory of what that
person is into.
There are literally thousands of directory websites. It is difficult to
manually upload information to each site, but it can be done and it will
improve your site’s ranking. Each link will provide you with a single valid
backlink. This will be a one-way link that does not fall foul of bad practice
as determined by the search engines.
As there are at least 8,000 directories and as many have been accused
of link spamming, it is important to find the right company to deal with.
Most companies that submit to large numbers of directories hire an
outside company to do the work for them.
A good backlinking company will do the following:
1. Research all the possible means of linking your site
2. Remove all sites that offer paid links and spam links
3. Provide human and not software-based linking
4. Will update and refresh links
5. Will keep up to date with changes in Search Engine algorithms.
If you wish to manually submit your links, then it is worth looking at the
following websites:
1. SoMuch.com – a simple and totally free linking site.
2. DMoz.org – an open directory project.
3. exactseek.com
4. freewebsitedirectory.com
5. infignos.com
6. pegasusdirectory.com
7. gooddirectory.net
The above picture demonstrates a typical directory submission page. It
includes elements such as the title, URL, description, name, email,
category and so on.
Access websites such as best-web-directories.com to find more free and
fee paying web directories. Study each one carefully before submitting
your site as some list gambling and adult content sites, which might not
be a good fit for you.

Blog Comments
Perhaps the simplest way to backlink your website or webpage is to
comment on other people’s blogs. You can find blogs by searching the
internet using any search engine you desire or by searching WordPress
or Blogger’s directories, using the keywords that are related to the
specific blog post or site that you want to promote.
Most blogs have a capacity for leaving comments. These can be on
specific blog posts or pages. Each form varies, but they usually allow
you to post a comment, inside which you can leave a hyperlink to your
site. Others will allow you to designate a specific URL when you post
your comment. These are better because it means that when someone
clicks on your username it automatically takes them to your page/site.
In order to choose a good blog to comment on, you need to be careful in
your selection. Check the blog to make sure the content reflects your
interests and your style, then check how old the blog is, how often it is
updated and if possible, how many views it is getting. The higher quality
the blog, the more the backlink is worth.
When writing blog comments it is important to remember some basic
rules about comments:
1. Make sure the article/post is relevant to your page.
2. Address the comment towards the content of that page
3. Offer a genuine opinion.
4. Do copy and paste formulaic comments.
5. Use clear and concise English.
These are important because if you do not follow them, chances are
webmasters and blog owners will delete your comments. Believe me, if I
think a comment is spam then I will delete it.

Bookmarking Sites
Bookmarking sites are a combination of the directory and the social
network. Users get to choose what kind of content they want to see and
the website uses that information combined with past activity to make
suggestions. Popular bookmarking sites include Digg, StumbleUpon and
Delicious.
Also called social bookmarking, the sites work in a similar fashion to your
social networking sites. Instead of posting personal messages and
photographs, users recommend links to sites they have encountered. In
an ideal world, you want everyday people you do not know stumbling
upon your site and you want them to dig it. This may happen, but by
creating a profile for your site, you can get the ball rolling.
It is possible to access many of the social bookmarking sites using your
Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn profiles. If this is the case, I recommend
you access the sites in this manner. Why? Because it makes access a
lot simpler and easier for you.
If this is not the case, then create a profile in the same manner as for
previous websites. Keep the tone relaxed and informative, do not over
sell the business, but put a positive spin on it. You must, must, must,
include your website’s URL in your profile.
Now, when you access your website find the webpage that you want to
promote.
Click on the URL at the top of the browser and copy it.
Find the social bookmarking site’s recommend function and paste the
link into the box marked “link URL.”
Fill in the rest of the information required. This will usually include the
name of the site or company, some tags/keywords and a brief
description or opinion regarding the site.
Post the link within the social bookmarking site and you will now have an
active backlink.

Articles and Blogs
As you will know by now, any document can include hyperlinks to any
website of your choice. Indeed, it is beneficial to the SEO ranking of your
site to include a few, but not too many, internal and external hyperlinks in
any blog post or online article.
The first place you should look toward posting online articles is your own
site. As discussed in the SEO section of this eBook, the size of your site
and the number of pages help to give it a certain amount of rank.
Next, you need to think about what articles can be written that you can
link back to your original site. Think about it like this, you are running a
business that helps people find work. Part of this includes a CV/Resume
writing and editing service. This gives you a great opportunity to develop
backlinks by writing articles on writing resumes and CVs.
Before you post your article or blog post, check it carefully. The last thing
you want to do is say to readers that your English is poor. Or worse, that
you are outsourcing your writing to people in developing countries on the
cheap. You need quality content that is either interesting or useful,
preferably both.
Once you have one article, it is possible to re-write, re-word and change
the angle to develop a number of similar yet different articles. Be careful
at this stage as repetition and exact copies are likely to fall foul of search
engine spamming filters.
It is possible to post these articles on your website, but this does not
grant you a backlink. Instead, you need to develop a fresh directory of
article submission sites. Many of these allow you to create a backlinked
article. They have varying degrees of editing and submission guidelines.
Some, but not all, offer writers a share of income generated through
advertising (usually using Google Adsense).
The top ranked article submission sites include:
1. Annotum will launch in May, 2012 and replaces Google Knol as a
source of academic articles.
2. Squidoo allows users to build lenses of particular knowledge that you
can send back to your website.
3. Hubpages acts in a similar fashion, but you can link your hubs to your
personal or corporate adsense account or product links without cluttering
up your personal web space.
4. EzineArticles allows you to post quality content and link back to your
personal site.
5. Examiner is a site allowing users to post news articles on specific
subjects. This is a good way to post news articles about your own
business.
6. Technorati is similar, but concentrates on technology and business.
7. ArticleBase is a directory for articles. This is a simple means of
creating backlinks.
If you have the time and patience, you can create articles, spin them into
new forms and post them to sites such as those mentioned above. It is
possible that they will generate you small amounts of money, but the
primary motive should be recognition and backlinks. It is possible to hire
workers to write and spin articles on your behalf for as little as $1 per
article depending on your quality requirements.

Forum Profiles
Treat forum profiles as a permanent comment facility. Follow some
simple rules and you can exploit the use of forums across the web to the
gain of your website.
The forum was a place in the Roman Empire where people could meet,
trade goods and information, and listen to politicians on the stump.
Today, internet forums are places where people discuss various
subjects. Some forums are highly specific while others are more general.
As with blog, commenting it is important that you choose your forums
carefully. As with blogs, first check out the quality of the forum before you
decide to join it. Look for the following criteria:
1. Does the Forum have recent posts?
2. How many replies are the top posts receiving?
3. Are there regular members?
4. Is the content relevant to your site?
5. Are there any negative elements that you do not want to be
associated with?
Once you have chosen a forum to join, follow its application process.
This may include submitting details about yourself and clicking on a
confirmation link via your email address. The best policy to follow when
creating a forum profile is to be honest. Create a profile that reflects you,
but in no way make it into a business profile. Any promotion of your site
or products needs to be relaxed, almost passive as a super salesman
personality will put a lot of people off and make it seem as if you are not
genuine.
You can either put the web link into your profile or include it as a
signature. I recommend the latter as it allows people to see your
signature every time you post a comment on the forum.
Now, as soon as you create the profile and create the link back to your
website you have created a backlink. Part of this is job done, but
remember this, every time you write a decent comment on the forum and
every time someone reads and replies to your comments, you are
promoting your site.
You do not have to become an obsessive member of the forum, but post
regularly on topics related to your website and webpages and you will be
creating additional backlinks as well as improving their quality.

How to Use
The key to building backlinks is to take the time to do them properly. The Google Panda update began the process of putting emphasis on the quality of the backlink and not just the amount. As Google has continued to advance their backlink analysis – it now includes contextual measurement – which means that the type of site the link originates from needs to have a logical relation with the site that the link points at. In other words if you have a niche site that sells chainsaws, having a backlink on it from a women’s cosmetic site will provide no value regardless of page or domain rank – and in most cases, get your site penalized.
The most important thing you can do when building backlinks is to create genuine content on the page the backlink is residing on. If you simply put your link on the page – even if you are using anchor text, if the page contains little else but your link – then it has a greatly diminished value.
I’ved provide you with hundreds of quality backlink locations – but that doesn’t mean you need to put your backlink on every page. Instead, take your time to choose quality backlink locations and then add legitimate content to that page. It also is a good idea to update that content to keep the page fresh if it’s a social media site. Finally, another excellent strategy is to build links to the sites you create your first set of links on – as this will increase the link juice of the pointing page.
