Backlinks from .EDU Blogs

Finding blogs hosted by universities involves the use of Google.com and a specific set of commands that one can use in Google to unearth .EDU blogs. The codes are as follows:

? site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment"
? site:.edu ¡°Powered by BlogEngine.NET¡±site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment¡±
? site:.edu ¡°Powered by ExpressionEngine¡± site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment¡±

Using the codes above, it¡¯s just a matter of entering any one of the above three into the search field of Google and clicking on ¡°Google Search¡±, as detailed below:

As you can see, this search returned nearly 1,500 results and that¡¯s just for one small niche. We can further filter these results by adding the following to the search string -¡°comments closed¡± and ¨C¡°you must be logged in¡±. These additional two pieces of text tell Google to filter out blogs where commenting has been disabled. Your search query should only return .EDU blogs where you are freely able to comment. The full search code will look like this:

? site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment" -¡°comments closed¡± -¡°you must be logged in¡±

Enter this into the Google¡¯s search field and select an .EDU domain from your search result. Scroll to the bottom of the page of the site you have selected. You should see a comment submission section that will look similar to this¡

Your job now is to fill in the sections, as outlined above, making sure to use the http:// prefix in front of your domain name. If there is no ¡°Website¡± section to fill in, it¡¯s time to move on to the next blog, as no backlinks are allowed. Some blogs use Captcher to deter spammers. You¡¯ll just need to solve it addition to entering your other details before you submit your comment.

It is important to note that you should read the blog post that you intend to comment on. Take a bit of time and then write something well considered. It¡¯s no good spamming these blogs with posts such as: ¡°Nice post¡± ¡°Good article¡± ¡°Thanks for sharing¡± ¨C that¡¯s just not going to cut it. Your comment and link will be rejected and you¡¯ll have wasted your time. So, make an honest contribution to the conversation, keep it natural and be rewarded with a link that¡¯s approved by the webmasters. If you build just 6-7 links each day using this method you will start to see change in the SERPs quite quickly.

Over one or two months, the improvement will be quite dramatic.

Sifting through the blogs on all these sites can be time consuming, most do allow comment, but some don¡¯t. Equally, some don¡¯t require approval by a moderator and some do. Nevertheless, it really is worth spending time to find quality .EDU backlinks and commenting wisely to cash in on the SERP increases that they are known to bring.

Backlinks from .EDU Forum Profiles

Similar to acquiring .EDU blogs, getting your hands on .EDU forum profiles that let you drop backlinks involves Google.com and a specific set of codes. It needs to be stated from the get-go that the process is a little more convoluted ¨C different sites use different forum platforms. Do not let that distract you from the overriding fact that these backlinks seriously rock. The more you familiarise yourself with each type of platform, the easier it becomes to spot which platform is being used and how you need to set your profile up.

The fact that it¡¯s a little more difficult and protracted to secure .EDU forum profile backlinks means that they are less spammed and only the most focussed get to reap the benefits. So, be sure to take the time to find quality .EDU forums and learn how to use them to best effect. It will be worth the effort.

Initially the process is the same with the blogs, as specified above. It is the code that is different. You will need to select one of the following codes to enter into the search field of Google.com:

? site:.edu "Powered by vBulletin" inurl:¡±register¡±
? site:.edu ¡°Powered by phpBB¡± inurl:¡±register¡±
? site:.edu ¡°Powered by PunBB inurl:¡±register¡±
? site:.edu ¡°Powered by SMF¡± inurl:¡±register¡±
? site:.edu ¡°Powered by IPB¡± inurl:¡±register¡±

Your search results should return plenty of .EDU domains that offer the facility of joining and participating in discussion forums. The good thing about forums is that, when you join and become a member, you are given a profile that you can customise, which includes the option of providing a backlink to the site of choice. The cherry on the cake here is that you can add a backlink as part of your profile!

Regardless of whether you are searching for phpBB, SMF or any of the above forum types, the process is the relatively the same ¨C find and click on the ¡°Register¡± button then follow the instructions on the site. Some sites need more information than others, some use Captcher and random questions to reduce spam and others need moderator approval before you can create an account. Treat each site registration individually as the domain dictates.

One standard requirement is an active e-mail address, as all .EDU sites send profile account details by e-mail and you¡¯ll be required to activate your profile through the URL included in the e-mails you receive when signing up. Once you have activated your account, you¡¯ll need to log in and amend your profile settings, which will of course include the opportunity to insert your backlink into the appropriate field. Depending on the forum platform used by the .EDU domain, you will need to use either standard text, HTML or BB Code. Assuming your keyword is ¡°Dog Training¡±, the code you should use will look like this:

HTML: <a ref=¡±http://www.Yoursite.com>Dog Training</a>

BB Code:

A couple of things you need to take note of when acquiring .EDU profile backlinks...

1. Make sure that the forum you intend to register with allows non-registered users to view member profiles. Setting up profile links on sites that are publicly closed is self-defeating! Always check this by establishing whether you can view the profiles of registered members before you have joined. If you are able to view the profiles of existing members, proceed and sign up.

2. It is often worth waiting a few days after registration to drop your link. Most forums show the ¡°most recent member¡± at the bottom if the site. Forum moderators use this function to view recent members and to filter spammers. Leaving it a few days until you have dropped off the new member list pays dividends. Simply return to your profile a few days after initial inception and create your backlink, safe in the knowledge that it¡¯s going to stick.

Let¡¯s take a look at the process involved in getting .EDU links from four great forums.
